Timbered Meadows Campground History
The year 1966 four couples wanted to camp closer to home. They asked Edwin Janssen if they could camp in his timber and he said yes. The four couples were Richard and Pat Hawthorne from Wellington; Bob and Pat McCay and family from Goodwine; Wendell and Vivian Ferdinand and family from Hoopeston; and Elmer and Ruth Ferdinand and family from Goodwine.
In 1967, during talk around the campfire, the fellows got the idea of digging a lake where the swimming area is.
After completion of the lake, they decided to name the front lake "Mchawferd" after the four fellows who started Timbered Meadows.
In 1968 and 1969, we had seven lots and two memberships.
In the spring of 1969, the well was dug.
In 1969, Clements Construction of Wellington dug the back lake which we later stocked with fish.
In 1973, electricity was installed and a shelter was built with the help of many weekend campers. The shower house was also built.
In 1983, we had 50 lots and memberships.
The flagpole is the original from in front of the Goodwine elevator, now standing close to the entrance of Timbered Meadows as a Memorial to Elmer Ferdinand and later a plaque was added for Edwin Janssen.
In 2002, Ray Morris from Floral City, FL. purchased the campground.
The following year, Ray formed The Timbered Meadows Campground Association.
The Association, along with volunteers have made alot of improvements. Some of the improvements are...rebuilding the pavilion, installing a basketball court, upgrading the electric, installing a playground, painting and upgrading the shower house. The old office was removed and the Association purchased a new office. With the help of volunteers the office was remodeled. Included was a new bulletin board on the outside of the building listing all the activities and news of the campground, a new steel roof and siding, pop machine, ice machine and cafateria style serving counter for the pavilion.
What will the campground be in the future? Much more beautiful and many more " Happy Times"
Thanks to all the people from 1966 to present that have made the campgrounds what it is today, A Great Place to bring the family and have a good time.
